LONGSTREET DURING THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR. A thesis presented to the Faculty of the U. S. Army. Command and General Staff College in.

Longstreet felt the sudden pain of a bullet passing through his neck and shoulder as he became yet another Lieutenant General James Longstreet, commander of the Confederate I Corps, had missed the Battle of Chancellorsville while serving with two divisions on detached duty in a supply operation in southeastern Virginia. Longstreet rejoined Lee outside Fredericksburg on May 9. Although Gen. Longstreet was not perfect, he should be remembered as one of the best generals that fought in the civil war. In my mind any general that survived as many battles as he had to be both skilled and lucky. He was courageous and vain, he was skilled and lucky, and he was a great leader and a sometimes flawed follower.

James Longstreet (January 8, 1821 – January 2, 1904) was one of the foremost Confederate generals of the American Civil War and the principal subordinate to General Robert E. Lee, who called him his "Old War Horse." He served under Lee as a corps commander for many of the famous battles fought by the Army of Northern Virginia in the Eastern Theater, but also with Gen. Braxton Bragg in the Army of Tennessee in the Western Theater. The fact of the matter is that General Longstreet was as loyal and as devoted to his country’s cause as anyone in Confederate gray, and that he had no superior as a hard fighter for that cause. He fully merits ranking alongside Stonewall Jackson as one of Lee’s paramount lieutenants. The story even has a fitting ending. Following a successful flank attack at the Battle of the Wilderness on May 6, 1864, Lieut. Gen. James Longstreet was riding forward along the Plank Road when a volley of fire emerged from the woods to his right.

Gen. Joseph Hooker’s Federal division. The Civil War defined Longstreet’s life. When Alabama seceded from the Union in January of 1861, Longstreet, like many other officers with ties to the south, felt the pull of his allegiance to his home in Georgia.
